How to write a Business Analyst resume?

How to prepare a Business Analyst resume?

Writing Resumes can be tedious and time-consuming. Resumes are the first element of getting shortlisted for a job interview. In today’s world, big organizations use ATS- Applicant Tracking System for shortlisting candidates from a bunch of resumes.

A resume must pass through the ATS to move to the next stage. Whether you are a fresher or an experienced Business Analyst, building a good resume is important to pass through an algorithm-based system- ATS or manual scrutiny- Hiring Team.

Top 6 tips to build Business Analyst Resume:-

1) Highlight your key achievements at the top of the resume

3) Highlight your projects, and courses

I. What was the objective of the project?

II. Highlight how you helped the team in meeting those objectives

Example-

For a Fresher:

  • While writing this, co-relate the tasks which you performed in meeting the objectives with business analysis work/skills and accordingly frame the sentences.

  • Example- For a salesperson, a salesperson does 1:1 interaction with clients to understand the client’s requirements for a product. So, on your resume, it will be something like - Conducted interviews to capture stakeholder requirements.

For an experienced Business Analyst

  • Keep the sentences short. Quantify the tasks performed, like reducing the onboarding process from 4 days to 1 day.

III. Highlight what you learned in the courses and how you implemented those skills

Example-

For a Fresher:

  • You have learned process flow diagrams. Pick any delivery application. You can use process flow diagrams in understanding the current state and highlight the gaps in it.

For an experienced Business Analyst:

  • Any example of how you used the skills learned in the courses at your workplace is good to add.

4) Highlight the certifications completed

What you learned & its use case in your daily life or any project. Examples mentioned in point 3 can help.

5) Highlight the business analysis skills in your resumes

The best way to do this is to show how you used the business analysis skills learned through a course, certifications, or on the job in completing a task/objective whether in your daily life or in a project. Points II & III will cover some of them.

You can include some under the Skills section in the resume

Divide the skills in a manner that few get identified through tasks performed and few are directly listed under the Skills section in the resume

6) Including Business Analysis, keywords are also important

Like- Business Process, Business Analysis, Business Requirements, Business Process Improvement, Process Improvement, Requirements Analysis, etc.

Read the job description carefully and you will be able to find some keywords from there too.

But be careful when including these keywords in the resume, understand the meaning of it, and try to articulate it in the form of a task you have performed or a skill you have gained.

Spelling and grammar mistakes can create a negative impression on the employer. Using a tool like Grammarly can help you identify and correct any errors in your resume.

ii. Update your LinkedIn profile and make sure it matches your uploaded resume:

Many employers will look at your LinkedIn profile, so it is important to ensure that your profile is up to date and matches the information in your resume. This can also help you increase your visibility and connect with potential employers.

DON'Ts:

Falsifying information on your resume can lead to serious consequences, including losing your job. Always present your skills and experiences truthfully and honestly.

ii. Overwhelm your resume with personal and irrelevant information:

Personal information such as your hobbies or interests are not relevant to your job as a business analyst, and can take up valuable space on your resume. Stick to the most relevant and important information.

iii. Make your resume too lengthy:

Employers are often busy and may not have time to read a lengthy resume. Keep your resume concise and focused on the most important information. A three-page resume is generally a good length for a business analyst.
