  • Requirement of 23 hours of project management training/education completed before sitting for the exam.

What is the CAPM exam application process?


If you want to take the CAPM exam, you have to go through an application process by providing all the necessary details to verify that you meet all the requirements for the exam. The application process starts as soon as you start filling the application form. Here are some highlights you need to keep in mind during your application process.

  • You have to complete your application within 90 days once you start.
  • On submission, it takes up to 5-7 business days to review your application for completeness.

What are the few steps to follow?


You can go through the entire application process in the CAPM handbook. You can expect the following steps for your application process.

  • Check your eligibility - The first step before starting your application process is to check whether you are eligible for the CAPM exam. You can check the eligibility criteria mentioned above.
  • Fill out the application form - If you are eligible to apply for the CAPM exam, you can start filling out the application form. You can easily find the application form online on the PMI website. You can take up to 90 days to fill out your application form. You need to fill out two different sections of the application form including a general education section and a section for your project management experience. After filling out the entire application form, you must recheck the information before you submit it for approval. Finally, go through and agree with the PMI Code of Ethics and professional conduct before submitting the form.
  • CAPM application completeness review and fee payment - After submitting your application form, PMI can take up to 24 hours-5 days to review your application form. On successful completeness review, you will get a confirmation email. After which you can pay your exam fees and schedule the exam.
  • CAPM Audit - There are chances that PMI may select your application for an audit. The audit process is a way for PMI to quality-check your application. However, the audit process is completely random and PMI may or may not select your application for an audit. You will receive an email if PMI selects your application for an audit. You might have to submit copies of educational certifications, experience certifications, among other requirements. The PMI audit process usually takes up to 5-7 business days. After the audit process, you will receive an email either for rejection or acceptance of your application form.
  • Schedule the CAPM exam date - If PMI does not select your application for an audit, then you will receive a confirmation email with a code to schedule your CAPM exam date.

The cost structure for the CAPM exam is as follows:

  • PMI members: ₹12,202.00
  • Non-PMI members: ₹16,218.00

The candidates can become PMI members by opting for a membership plan that costs ₹7,646.00/year along with a one-time ₹772/year application fee. PMI membership comes with its perks for the candidates such as access to the project management job board, complimentary download of the PMBOK guide.


CAPM exam format and syllabus


CAPM exam format


  • The CAPM examination exam is a multiple-choice question based exam. In updated version, candidates can attend the exam in 8 different languages. After completing the exam, candidate will receive a mail which will inform them about the result. On majority of the people who scored more than 80% in the simulator test will pass the real exam.
  • All the questions are arranged randomly covering the topics Project Management Fundamentals and its Core Concepts, Predictive Plan-Based Methodologies, Agile Frameworks/Methodologies, Business Analysis Frameworks throughout the examination.
  • This CAPM exam should be taken in a test center or an online proctored exam, which is a timed assessment administered through an online platform that supervises the applicant's desktop activity, webcam video, and audio.
  • In CAPM examination you have 3 hours to complete the examination.
  • There are a total 150 questions which has multiple choices to pick as an answer.
  • In those 150 questions,15 are the pretest questions. Pretest questions are used in exams as an efficient and legal way to test the validity of subsequent examination questions. These pretest questions have no bearing on the final score.
  • In those 3 hours’ time, you will have a break for 10 minutes.
  • The break will appear when you finish your first 75 questions and review them all. You should be attentive at this part, because once you finish reviewing your answers and start your break, you might not be able to return to the previous session.
  • In this examination you also have a tutorial. Addition to that there will be a survey. Both of which are optional. It may take 5 to 15 minutes to complete. This time will not be compromised with the prearranged time of 3 hours for the examination.

Exam retake policy


  • We recommend that you keep studying and retake the exam if you don't pass it the first time. Within your 1-year eligibility period, you may take the test up to three times.
  • You are required to wait one year from the date of the final exam after three failed attempts before reapplying for the certification.
  • This policy is intended to protect exam security while also limiting individual candidates' exposure to examination questions. You are free to apply for whichever additional PMI certifications in these years.

What is the CAPM recertification process?


PMI offers a renewal process for CAPM Certification that allows candidates to keep the CAPM certificates valid even after the expiration of the validity and without retaking the exam. Candidates can renew their certificates by earning 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) within 3 years of the certification cycle.
